Here are 6 simple tips to help you stand out in the crowd and make a great impression with potential employers:
- Do your homework on the company and position you are applying for. This will show your interest and dedication, which in turn, will put you in a more favorable light during your interview.
- Show your face even if you have not landed an interview yet. Visit the company after you have applied for a position to help the hiring manager put a face on your resume and possibly make a personal connection.
- Sell yourself! A healthy dose of self-confidence goes a long way in impressing a potential employer. Emphasize your strengths and career experience while showing how you can be an asset to the company you are applying with. Also provide solutions for any problems that could occur at your new job due to your disability. For example, if you are hard-of-hearing explain your successful use of assistive listening devices.
- Maintain a positive attitude and don't forget to smile. Refrain from making any negative remarks about former employers or job situations, no matter how bad your previous experiences were. No one likes to be around whiners and complainers.
- Dress for the position you are applying for or above to show your professionalism. If your financial situation does not allow you to buy at least one appropiate outfit, you can request help from the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
