6 ways to avoid becoming a violent crime victim

According to the National Crime Stop Program, there is a violent crime taking place somewhere in the U.S. every 23 seconds. So awareness and preparedness can go a long way in protecting yourself.

Here are 7 ways you can avoid becoming a victim of a violent crime.

  1. Use the buddy system, especially when going out at night.
  2. Park in well lit areas that are free of obstructions like big trees, bushes, or dumpsters.
  3. Don't text or talk on the phone/VP while walking to your car.
  4. Have your keys ready in your hand before you exit any building so that you can keep your focus on scanning your environment while walking to your vehicle.
  5. Always be aware of your surroundings, no matter if out at the park, mall, or street.
  6. Make eye contact with people to appear confident since most criminals target people with low self-esteem.
