3 tips for landing your next job interview

How do you make yourself stand out in the rat race for currently scarce jobs to land a much coveted interview? The basic idea is to make it easy for the person in charge of hiring to remember you and see why having you on board might be a good idea.

Here are 3 tips to help you get the proverbial foot in the door:
  1. Go to meet the hiring manager in person after submitting your resume online. Don't make an appointment and don't pass go. Most of all, don't think you are not worth his time. Everyone can spare 5 minutes for a quick chat. When he finally gets back to that stack of resume he will hopefully remember your face.
  2. Visit businesses to offer your services even if they are not advertising for an open position. You might save them the hassle of posting that ad if you can effectively show that your skills are a perfect match. This might sound like a cliche, but being in the right place at the right time is indeed priceless.
  3. Ask people you know for referrals. More often than not, the person with the best connections rather than the best resume gets the job. Which is just another reason for attending as many networking meetings and job fairs as possible.
